What are Runes and How Do They Work?
Runes are special magical items that can be embedded into gear to activate unique effects. To create a rune word, you need to combine two runes:
- Rune of Ritual
- Rune of Invocation
The Rune of Ritual is placed in the lower slot, while the Rune of Invocation goes in the upper slot, allowing the creation of a rune word and its effects.
Can you obtain runes without the expansion?
No, without the Vessel of Hatred expansion, runes cannot be obtained. They only start dropping after completing the story quest “Fundament of Faith” in the VoH campaign.
How to Obtain Runes?
There are several main ways to acquire runes:
- Main campaign bosses – guarantee a rune drop after the first kill.
- World bosses – have a chance to drop runes upon defeat.
- Fortress captures – at level 20+, magical runes can be obtained after the first successful capture.
- Kurast Underbelly – using the “Tribute of Harmony” guarantees a rune.
- Material caches – available from the barter vendor after reaching reputation level 8 with Aldkin in the “Den” location.
Main Features of Runes and Rune Words
- Only players with the Vessel of Hatred expansion can use runes.
- Runes work only in pairs – single runes provide no effect.
- Only two rune words can be equipped at the same time.
- The same runes cannot be used – they function like unique items.
- Runes can be stored in the inventory or traded with other players.
- Runes can be removed from gear via the jeweler.
- If an item with a rune word is dismantled, the runes return to the inventory.
- Used to craft mythical unique items.
How to Create Rune Words?
A Rune Word is formed using two components:
- Rune of Ritual – generates an “Offering.”
- Rune of Invocation – uses the “Offering” and activates an effect.
Example Rune Word:
- Lith (Rune of Ritual) – creates 25 Offerings if the character stays still during combat.
- Eom (Rune of Invocation) – requires 100 Offerings and reduces skill cooldowns.
- To activate the effect, you need to accumulate 100 Offerings by staying still for 0.3 seconds four times.
New Runes in Season 7
This season introduced new runes: Chac, Igni, and Nagu. Developers also adjusted the balance of some runes, including their Offering values.
Is It Worth Using Runes?
The rune system is a key part of the endgame content in Diablo 4. Proper rune word selection can significantly enhance a character, especially when using the Overflow mechanic.
However, runes are only available to expansion owners, which may give them a slight advantage over players without it.
