A pickaxe is one of the most important tools in Minecraft, which plays a major role in the game for gathering resources for further progression. This tool is available in all versions of the game and directly affects player access to rare blocks and the comfort of gameplay.

 There are many types of pickaxes in the game, together they form clear "steps" of development, which allows limiting access to content the player is not yet ready for. Below is a list of all pickaxes available in the latest version of Minecraft:

  •  Wooden pickaxe, crafted from planks, has low durability and is used only for mining basic stone and coal. Like other wooden tools it can be used as fuel.
  •  Stone pickaxe is crafted from stone obtained at the beginning of the game, it can also be purchased from a villager for a few emeralds. Players use it until they find iron or copper. It can also already mine lapis lazuli.
  •  Copper pickaxe was added to the game recently and has the same capabilities as a stone one, but can boast better durability. 
  •  Iron pickaxe opens the way to the most valuable resources of the Overworld. It can mine diamonds and gold for equipment, redstone for mechanisms and emeralds for trading with villagers.
  •  Golden pickaxe, despite the value of the material, mines the same resources as a stone one, but breaks faster. The only feature of all golden tools is high efficiency.
  •  Diamond pickaxe is the best option a player can obtain before traveling to the Nether. It can mine obsidian and has high durability and efficiency.
  • Better than a diamond pickaxe is only the netherite one. It can only be obtained by upgrading a diamond pickaxe on a smithing table using a netherite ingot. You will learn more about this process below, in the section "How to craft a pickaxe".

Pickaxe enchantments
 The enchantment system allows increasing efficiency of tools with various effects. For example, "Efficiency" reduces the time it takes for a pickaxe to break blocks, while "Fortune" increases the amount of drops from some blocks. To make your tools last longer, use "Unbreaking". You can enchant your tools on an Enchanting Table or on an anvil by combining them with an enchanted book. How to craft a pickaxe:

  1. Create a crafting table from 4 planks of any wood
  2. Place 3 units of the material the pickaxe is made of(planks, stone, diamonds and so on)
  3. Place 2 sticks in the center and below it.
  4. Take the finished pickaxe

To craft a netherite pickaxe a different process is required:

  1. Create a diamond pickaxe
  2. Find ancient debris in the Nether, smelt it into netherite scrap and craft one netherite ingot from 4 scraps and 4 gold ingots. This will be especially useful for walls in minecraft
  3. On a smithing table combine the diamond pickaxe and the ingot
  4. Take the finished best pickaxe in the game!
