Expedition 33 is a project that many already call a potential game of the year. The combination of a deep story, an artistically crafted world, and a dynamic combat system draws the attention of RPG fans. But is it really worth the player's attention, and how to get the most enjoyment from the playthrough?

The events unfold on the island of Lumière, which, after a mysterious rift 67 years ago, ended up in another dimension. Every year, a number appears on a magical obelisk — the age after which residents simply disappear. The player leads the 33rd expedition to destroy the creature behind this curse. The setting is a blend of Renaissance France with elements of dark fantasy. The developers have successfully combined historical atmosphere with a mystical plot, creating a unique environment for exploration. Although the game is classified as a turn-based RPG, the combat system is much more complex. Players need precise timing for dodges and attacks. Battles are a mix of tactics, reaction, and character ability knowledge.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 key aspects

Main Mechanics:

  • Timing: a correctly pressed button can double the damage of an attack.

  • Skill Synergies: interaction between multiple heroes’ abilities allows for strong combos. For example, one character’s mark can enhance another’s burn effect, unlocking bonus states and damage.

  • Enemy incapacitation: certain attacks can "break" enemies, forcing them to skip a turn. This is crucial in boss fights.

The game has three difficulty levels:

  • Story Mode: suitable for beginners, forgiving of timing mistakes.

  • Expeditioner: medium challenge level.

  • Expert: highly challenging, reminiscent of Dark Souls, where even small mistakes are costly.

The game world is non-linear. While movement between locations is limited, they contain many branches with extra materials, pictos (local runes), secrets, and even unique bosses. Exploration is rewarded with resources for equipment upgrades and new story fragments. It's similar to Elden Ring—by the way, we recently gave away free Elden keys.

Character progression includes:

  • Five main attributes: vitality, strength, agility, defense, luck.

  • A skill tree with gradual unlocking of stronger abilities.

  • Pictos — special runes that grant stat bonuses. Some are conditionally activated, e.g., when health drops below 50%.

Another important mechanic is the Luminus system. It allows characters to use rune effects even if they’re not directly equipped. This expands tactical options and combat depth. The game includes autosave, but primary saving happens at flags left by past expeditions. After the second location, a global map opens, giving access to merchants, side battles, camps, and new exploration routes.
The main currency is chroma. It can be spent on consumables, lumin, and other upgrades. Merchants offer extra options after defeating them in duels — these unique fights unlock rare items.
Clare Obscure: Expedition 33 is more than just another RPG. Its deep combat system, unique atmosphere, and branching world make it feel like a true game of the year. It demands attention, patience, and tactical thinking. But for those ready to dive in — it’s an unforgettable experience.
